Coming straight from Beverly Hills, this breathtaking and extremely rare butterscotch bakelite necklace could have been in the Paris Art Deco Exhibition in 1928. It is more art deco that any deco piece I have seen in ages! Circa late 1920s to early 1940s, it has fabulous angular lines. The geometric centerpiece is a dramatic 3 and 1/8" across by 1 and 7/8" tall. And it is nice and thick with the base being 3/16" thick and when you include the beads, it is a little over 1" thick. The big butterscotch beads are wired through the angular centerpiece and connect around a little ring at the back with gold wires. 16 and 1/2" long, it closes with an old style spring ring clasp... you know... the ones with the tiniest thumb catches? When Millicent Rogers chucked her debutante life and set out to be an artist in Taos, New Mexico where Georgia O'Keefe reined as the leading art dame, Miriam Haskell responded to the simpler, more natural approach to life, love and fashion. Miriam created this wonderfully rich glass bead, wood bell parure, accented with celluloid leaves and hung on a fanciful celluloid chain. Now it's 'environmentally friendly', then it was 'patriotic'. (Metal was needed for the war effort so she did not use metal during the war.) Either way, it speaks to the love of a natural aesthetic grounded in a clever use of unusual jewelry materials. Overall, the charming necklace measures 15 and 1/2" long, a little over 1 and 1/2" wide, and a full 1" thick with bells. It closes with its original vintage celluloid hook clasp. The matching bracelet features the same wooden bell beads, leaves and tiny glass beads and measures 7 and 1/4" long and also closes with its original celluloid clasp. Millicent spent her money on antiques, so much so that she amassed 5,000 pieces her sons placed in a museum when she died.
